Thank you, thank you, thank you!
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, have you asked yourself the question “have I properly said thank you to my team for all their efforts this year”? If you are still thinking about the answer, then I’ll answer it for you…no, you have not. A simple thank you goes a long way in today’s workplace but is it a sincere thank you? Have you actually stopped and taken the time to best acknowledge the people, who have helped push the company forward this year? Have you given thought to reinforcing that gratitude with an act of recognition? Are you the only one recognizing them? There are many ways a person can feel your appreciation and recognition, whether it be publicly, at your annual awards dinner, a weekly team meeting or perhaps, quietly and more personally, over a coffee, lunch or simply giving them a handwritten note with tangible reward inside. Keep in mind that the delivery of the thank you should match the personality of the recipient and reward should be reflective of that person and the support they have shown the company.
Don’t get me wrong, a thank you or a full Employee Recognition program shouldn’t been a seasonal thing or only from the top down. As Josh Bersin outlines, in his Forbes article, ‘New Research Unlocks the Secret of Employee Recognition,’ there are few best practices to understand first:
1. Recognize people based on specific results and behaviors.
2. Implement peer to peer recognition – not just top down.
3. Share recognition stories.
4. Make recognition easy and frequent.
5. Tie recognition to your own company values or goals.
Consider a meaningful way to thank and recognize your team: openly, honestly and all year long. Try it and you will succeed and so will the team!
