Did you know that Halloween is now the second most popular holiday in the U.S. (behind Christmas)? It is popular with employees and let’s be honest; it brings out the child in us all. Why not have a little Halloween fun in the workplace and get people motivated?
A good idea to keep in mind for any office celebration, not just Halloween, is to create a holiday planning committee. This will promote team building and leadership among workers while encouraging fresh ideas. It also gives employees the opportunity to feel more involved, plus it’s just plain fun.
Halloween happens to fall on a Friday this year- a perfect day to let your employees break early for some fun! Until you begin your own company tradition, here are some ideas to get you started.
Encourage staff to wear their costumes to work for the day (appropriately following dress codes of course). Have their co-workers vote on the best-dressed, but include a variety of categories so that no one feels left out. For instance, Best Costume, Funniest Costume, Most Creative, Scariest, etc. and include prizes for each. Remember to advertise the prizes in advance. This will build excitement and encourage employees to get a little more involved with the festivities!
Pumpkin Carving Contest
This could be set up in a couple of different ways – divide your employees into teams (maybe with co-workers they don’t normally work with) or make it a family event later in the day and encourage workers to bring in their families as teams. You can make it an in-house vote on the best pumpkin or post pictures to your company’s social media and have your fans vote!
Offer prizes or awards (as suggested with categories for the costume party) for festive work areas. If there are shared work areas this can also boost a team environment to decorate together.
An Afternoon of Games
Not everyone may want to bob for apples, but it can be a fun activity for those that do (and for those that just choose to watch)! You can take any normal team building game or activity and put a spooky spin on it.
Is there a Halloween parade or hayride in your area that needs volunteers? Find community events that need help and encourage your employees to volunteer. Maybe even visit an elderly care center or pediatric care center and pass out treats. Donate costumes, treats, clothing or food to those in need.
