Employee recognition vs. Employee Engagament

Employee Engagement, as a concept, is sometimes misinterpreted as Employee Recognition, but that is not the case. Both are important and related, however they have more of a cause and effect relationship. Employee Engagement is the outcome of consistent and effective Employee Recognition.

Employee Engagement occurs as the end-game of a focused effort that includes various tactics and methods-like employee recognition programs, salary & benefits, and other related programs.

When assessing trends from 2005 to the present day, it is interesting to note that Employee Engagement has significantly overtaken Employee Recognition as a search term in the News headlines. So naturally, the question is…why?

Let me explain. The business landscape has changed dramatically over the past 10 years and competition for new talent has significantly increased. According to a recent Deloitte and CEBS survey, the competition for leading talent across the world is becoming more and more intense. Companies have come to realize that just recognizing employees will not necessarily achieve their business goals.

As access to a wide array of global markets continues to increase, the competition for leading talent around the world is also becoming more intense. At the same time, economic conditions vary greatly across geographies, each with its own set of challenges. The survey reveals that the top challenges for HR over the next three years are

  1. Finding talent
  2. Motivating workers
  3. Keeping those talented, motivated workers

In order to save yourself the headache of taking personal responsibility for all three of these challenging areas, consider implementing an employee incentive program. Perhaps one for referring new talent, one for recognizing employees and thus promoting an environment of employee engagement and respect, and finally a years of Service Program to keep your most valuable employees loyal.

Tell us, what are some additional HR challenges you predict over the next three years that may require an employee incentive program?
