Safety incentive programs are shown to increase overall employee performance. They can reduce turnover, boost morale, loyalty,improve employee wellness, and increase retention. In addition,programs can be tools that drive employees to reach performance
and safety goals by promotions and “giveaways.”

Implementing a points-based safety program that could be cost effective and show
tangible results was the challenge for Airgas. But the company wanted more than just
cost savings. A company survey indicated that employees weren’t responding to the
negative feedback approach that included deferral of raises, disciplinary warnings and
even suspensions.
